Green to steer Pay Me south after storming Brisbane win

11/10/2008 11:00:01 PM

PAY ME earned himself a trip to Sydney when he scored an impressive staying win at Eagle Farm yesterday.

Pay Me ($3.90) was rewarded for his consistency when he steamed down the centre of the track to defeat Chief Comingfirst ($5) by 1¼ lengths.

Currigee ($10) was a nose back third in the Boom Logistics Handicap (2100 metres).

Confidently ridden by premier jockey Jim Byrne, Pay Me broke a metropolitan drought for astute Doomben trainer Tracy Green and convinced her he was up to the better class in Sydney.

"It's been a while since I've had a city winner," Green said.

"This bloke was my last winner back in January, and he's earned a trip away now.

"There are no races on in Brisbane for him for another month and there's a race in Sydney in two weeks over 2000 metres that will suit him perfectly."

Byrne agreed with Green's assessment and said Pay Me was racing in career-best form.

"He's racing really well lately," Byrne said.

"His last run was full of merit and I was confident he would be very hard to beat today.

"He's definitely up to winning a race in Sydney, and I'd be keen to ride him if he was in the right race."

Pay Me raced well on unsuitable tracks during the winter carnival and Green said her confidence grew as rain fell in Brisbane on Friday night.

"He handles a wet track but those tracks during the winter were bottomless," Green said.

"He likes it soft but he has to have a bit of footing to do his best.

"I have to convince the owner about the Sydney trip but he'll be heading down providing he pulls up in good order."

Pay Me provided Byrne with the first leg of a winning double.

The gun hoop returned to the winner's circle after the following race when he scored a big win on promising mare On The Fridge.

The Rob Heathcote-trained On The Fridge ($3.50 favourite), a five-year-old by Easy Rocking, registered her fifth win from just seven starts when she finished powerfully to win the Marist College Ashgrove Handicap (1200m) by three lengths from Our Magic ($12).

Pelltro ($16) was a short neck away third.
