Whobegotyou is just having fun

11/10/2008 11:00:01 PM

WHOBEGOTYOU destroyed Caulfield Guineas rivals in a couple of bounds yesterday but trainer Mark Kavanagh isn't about to punish the exciting three-year-old.

The astute Kavanagh put things in perspective when asked about the thoroughbred cheapie competing in Australasian racing's championship event, the Cox Plate, on Saturday week.

"Two weeks to the [AAMI] Vase and then the Victoria Derby, but no Cox Plate," Kavanagh said.

"He is a gelding, we've got a few years of fun. We had fun today and we want to keep having fun. We don't want to gut him."

Kavanagh described the gelding, which was having his sixth start as "pretty exciting", while Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michael Rodd reckoned Whobegotyou was a bit like Kentucky Derby winner Big Brown.

"Big Brown dominated in America, he just sat back and came around them, put rivals away in a couple of bounds," Rodd said.

"When you think it is time to go on this horse, you point in him in the right direction and off you go.

"That was a special win."

Whobegotyou dominated betting on the group 1 classic, with punters stepping in to take the $3.20 and the son of Street Cry eventually starting a clear $3 favourite. Supporters were given no cause for concern.

Rival jockey Dwayne Dunn got a close-up-and-personal look at Whobegotyou when partnering the $2 million colt Time Thief into second place behind the guineas favourite.

"I got out, was ready to go at the home bend and I thought I had a lap full of horse," Dunn said. "But the winner just raced away from me, it was a bit like Weekend Hussler's win last year."

Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter was another taken by Whobegotyou's performance.

"It is stating the obvious but that was a very, very impressive performance," Carpenter said.

"He got back in the field, went around them, had them covered easily and when asked to let down he put a space in them.

"He was probably more impressive than Weekend Hussler this year. This horse beat a field with some very good colts from Sydney in it, which wasn't the case last year due to equine influenza.

"It was a win of great merit."

David Hayes, who trained the third-placed Von Costa De Hero, was another who rated Whobegotyou.

"He is a pretty exciting horse," Hayes said.

"He was just too good for them."

Kavanagh won the Yalumba Stakes with Maldivian and the Toorak with Divine Madonna last year but the one-time jumps jockey struggled for words yesterday.

"He has done everything right this preparation, haven't had one set back, it is starting to get pretty exciting," Kavanagh said.

"I'm not going to get overawed by it, he just cruised around them. He just keeps improving and we are nowhere near the bottom of him yet.

"He did surprise me but I've got a bit of time for him, he treated those guys with contempt."

Gai Waterhouse's lightly raced Dreamscape, which started second favourite at $9.50, finished seventh and the trainer reported the colt would be sent for a spell, which is also the case for another Sydneysider, Duporth.

"He has done really good to finish fourth," Duporth's trainer Anthony Cummings said. "The winner was too good but my bloke will go to the paddock and return for the Australian Guineas and the Doncaster."
