Australians want higher fuel prices to counter climate change

28 Sep, 2009 03:51 AM
THREE-QUARTERS of Australians believe that the price of fossil fuels should be increased to deal with climate change and 92 per cent believe a legally binding global climate deal is urgent and should be made at the conference to be held in Copenhagen in December.

Their views are echoed by people from most other countries who took part in a simultaneous global consultation on climate change at the weekend organised by the Danish Board of Technology.

The project, Worldwide Views on Global Warming, had demographically representative groups of citizens deliberating in 38 countries, sending strong messages to their political leaders on the issue of climate change action.

Chinese bucked the trend, with only 51 per cent believing a global deal should be made at the United Nations climate conference. This compared with 90 per cent of Americans, 67 per cent of Russians and 91 per cent of Indonesians.

A surprisingly consistent majority (about two-thirds to three-quarters) in most countries believed that fossil fuel prices should be increased, although about half the respondents in China and Indonesia believed prices should be increased only in high-income countries.

Russia was an exception, with a significant minority of 36 per cent against any regulation of prices.

An overwhelming majority of respondents globally (Australia 94 per cent, Indonesia 92 per cent, US 90 per cent, China 89 per cent and Russia 86 per cent) believed their government should give high priority to joining any deal made in Copenhagen.

Worldwide, 4400 people took part in the consultation.

Wow the opinion poll to end all polls - 4400 people worldwide. I think this one needs filing under R for Rubbish.

Unbelievable, rigged, sham poll of idiots on an opium high. Have another poll when they are off the high and have to fill their car with petrol, if they have a car.

That would be about 3 people from each country. More green gibberish.

What an outlandish and unqualified headline put forward by a unintelligent and uneducated journalist. Three quarters of Australians Kelsey or three quarters of the Greens AGM? It could be interpretated that you are saying that over sixteen million Australians want higher fuel prices. If you ever need employment in London, The News of the World would show interest in your shallow ability.

You people really should learn to read... this wasn't a poll... and only 38 countries took part. It's stated in the article by the journo. Try using google to educate yourself before jumping to the keyboard.... http://www.wwviews.org/ The results are interesting, but they won't change my view on the climate change debate. Come on nats/libs... block the ETS so we can have an election.

More mindless indoctrination by a paper that's supposed to represent country people. What a joke.

Any Aussie who thought this obviously has no idea that Australia runs on fuel. If you think food is expensive now, just wait untill the ETS takes affect. Hope the government has plenty of money to fund Centrelink and to pay for the unemployment caused by this insanity. Our homeless and hungry will increase massively, we will see beggars on the street.

The figures surprise me! I would have said that 85% would be more likely as there has been stated many places on the web that only 15% of the world's population understand and see the REALITY of what is occuring around us!

Short of news?? Yeah!! Let's publish some ridiculous poll. Was it advertised somewhere decent or only on the extreme left of the Greens website? Or maybe only on PETA website. Oh no, the poll was on invitation only and they run out of time to give me a tingle!! The journo and the editor that allowed this rubbish to be published are NOT fit to work for the News of the World!! They might find employment with the 'Zimbabwe News' or better still 'The Iranian Daily'!!!!!!! Sack the lot!!

Even if this was a representative poll, which it clearly was not, this would be the same 92% who seriously believed the stock market would just keep going up, and up, and up. The difference in this case is that these bogans want the rest of us to invest in the same ponzi scheme that they think is going to keep them in clover. No thanks. Good luck with your comfortable retirement folks, you'll need it.
