Rural Aust 'sold out': Govt siphons 2bn from regional fund

05 Dec, 2008 07:48 PM
Rural and regional Australia has been sold out with the decision on early Friday morning, to allow the Government to siphon off the $2 billion Future Fund.

Only hours after thwarting the Government’s earlier attempts in the Senate to stop the money being taken out of the Communications Fund, the House of Representatives disallowed the amendments and returned the Bill to the Senate.

In spite of the Nationals holding their ground, the $2 billion that had been set aside by the previous Government for rural and regional communications will now be used by the Federal Government for its National Broadband Network.

Nationals Senators Barnaby Joyce, Ron Boswell, Fiona Nash and John Williams stood as one, condemning Labor for taking money away from country people.

“The $2 billion had been set aside by the Nationals in the previous Government to future-proof rural and regional communications," Senator Williams said.

"Now the Rudd Government has its hands on the money with no commitment to spend it in the bush.

“Disgraceful, appalling and shameful are an appropriate description of what Labor has done.

"They have shown before they are not interested in the well-being of rural Australia.

"Now a financial backstop that had been gained by the Nationals for country people will be frittered away.

"The Nationals have said we will die in the trenches to protect our investment in the bush, and by going it alone for the second time in a week we have been true to our word.”

Country people are being treated like second class citizens by Labor governments both State and Federal. We all know that there are two things Labor cannot manage: MONEY and WATER.

The Liberals helped destroy grower wheat marketing and this is more of the same. Well done Nationals.

Well, well, well the Libs are crying in the spilt milk and not getting their own way - where was Alby and self imposed warlord for the bush Heffernan in this debate? Will the 2 Lib Senators who voted with the Nats resign from the Libs and join the Nats - What about the other dozen or so Lib Senators who abstained from voting (effecting support for the Nats!). Joyce and co will not stand idle and have the rights and services of country people to be eroded, they will stand up for what they believe in and achieve the 'best possible' result for their constituents. Well done.

"Dysfunctional, mean and tricky" were the words used by Shane Stone in a previous outburst and it would appear in another life. The problems manifested in the Senate with a senior Lib hiding in the toilet and others scrambling to exit the chamber whilst the Nats stood for something, is clearly a management issue for those senior Libs. If Stone is seeking a target for that execrable utterance he should look no further than his own performance and that of his party. Increasingly these highly publicised moments help to define a Party - particularly where being a small target is all that remains.

This Labor government is proving to be stereotyped with the old Labor spending policy "spree". Currently they are buying votes and popularity with the majority from the city. What will be thought when surplus turns to deficit, when recession bites and unemployment rises. Typical arrogant policies are being applied and Australia, not just Rural Australia, is being denegrated. Private enterprise should and would bring broadband to world standards. Mr Rudd conserve some funds and look where development is sorely needed to be funded through government coffers. THE COUNTRY REGIONS
