Web guide offers ways to cut food waste bill

19 Mar, 2010 03:54 AM
A KILOGRAM of meat can cost as little as $5, but few people realise the true ''paddock-to-plate'' cost of their food, say the creators of a new website designed to boost the nation's food IQ.

Foodwise.com.au, which launches today, offers practical ways to reduce the country's $600 million annual food waste bill.

One of the website's creators and the founder of Planet Ark, Jon Dee, said people were lazy in the way they shop.

''We buy stuff we already have at home and we end up throwing [it] away.''

He said simple steps such as writing a shopping list and equipping the home to cope with surplus food could dramatically reduce waste. A growing appetite for out-of-season produce also increases ''food miles'' - the distance food travels from producer to consumer.

The president of Slow Food Australia, Nick Padol, said the obsession with processed foods created a sea of packaging waste.

''It takes an enormous amount of energy and natural resources to get [food] processed, packaged and into the home to cook,'' he said.

The CSIRO says it takes 50,000 litres of water to produce one kilogram of beef and 1550 litres to produce a kilogram of white rice.

It also tells you to eat less meat......is anti-GM and doesn't really tell you paddock to plate costs.

50,000 litres to produce a kilo of beef is a lie! A 3 year old steer will consume 50,000 litres of water in it's lifetime! Do the maths. Average water consumption by cattle is 45 litres a day, X 365 days, X 3 years = just under 50,000 litres. If the animal yields 250 kilo's of meat dressed it comes out at 200 litres per kilo. The water used to grow the fodder can't be counted as the rain will fall whether the animal eats the grass or not. If you have to lie to further your agenda then your agenda is flawed.

What a crock! Shame on you Melissa Singer and your editor..."The duty of a journalist is to find out the truth and inform it to the society." http://www.saching.com/Article/Unique-qualities-of-a-Journalist---Responsibilities-in-Journalism/764

My property produces 400 steers annually with an average dressed weight of 350 kg. If the CSIRO can produce 1 kg of white rice on my property I will give them $1 million. The CSIRO needs to return to planet Earth, something has gone wrong with their oxygen supply and it is affecting their brains.
