Abbott defeats Turnbull by one vote

Abbott defeats Turnbull by one vote

01 Dec, 2009 09:36 AM
TONY Abbott is the new leader of the Liberal Party after defeating Malcolm Turnbull by just one vote in the leadership spill a short time ago.

As expected, the Liberal party room has voted in favour of a motion to put the party leadership to a vote - effectively putting leader Malcolm Turnbull out of his job.

Nominations were then called for, with Mr Turnbulll, Mr Abbott and Joe Hockey also standing as candidates.

A first round vote was held, in which Mr Turnbull received 26 votes, Mr Abbott 35 votes, and Mr Hockey was eliminated from the contest with just 23 votes.

Mr Turnbull and Mr Abbott were then the options in a final two-horse race, which Mr Abbott won by just one vote 42-41.

The narrowness of the margin confirms that magnitude of the split within the party, and leadership speculation will continue into the future given that one MP, Victorian Fran Bailey, was unable to attend the meeting for health reasons and there are reports that one of the votes counted was informal.

Mr Abbott told the party that the deputy's position would not be put to a vote, and that Julie Bishop would continue in that job.

The biggest surprise out of the vote was the quick rejection of Mr Hockey, who was standing on a platform of holding an ETS conscience vote.

As Liberal MPs entered a party room meeting to vote on the leadership spill motion this morning, Liberal number crunchers said that Mr Turnbull would be knocked out early in the race.

Mr Hockey was then expected to face off against Tony Abbott but was expected to win in the final round.

Earlier, Mr Turnbull said he was "very confident" ahead of today’s leadership spill.

Mr Turnbull said he was the only candidate with a strong, clear, consistent and principled position on the emissions trading scheme.

"That’s what I stand for," Mr Turnbull said.

He told Sky News just ahead of the ballot that he would "always fight the good fight" and maintained that Australians wanted to see the emissions trading issue dealt with.

He said the amendments secured for the Government’s proposed carbon pollution reduction scheme would protect tens of thousands of jobs.

"We can’t be a policy-free zone," Mr Turnbull said

"We can’t be seen as climate deniers."

When asked about his attack on colleagues earlier this week, Mr Turnbull said he had proven he could work with people he had differences with in the past.

"I don’t bear grudges; I’m not a hater.

"I’ve been able to put past animosities behind me."

He said he’s always believed that the "things that unite us are more important than those which divide us".

The fact that the Liberal party has chosen Tony Abbott over Malcolm Turnbull (even by a tiny margin) just goes to show how committed they are to having the ETS go to the full debate of an election campaign. Sadly Joe Hockey has revealed himself as a gutless wonder incapable of leading anybody anywhere.

A one vote win is hardly a vote of confidence. I expect to see a lot more moving and shaking before this all settles down.

Well done Tony and the Liberals. This is a vote for small government, transparency and accountability of government, climate realism and open policy.

And meanwhile...little Krudd sits there in the corner laughing his butt off at all the blood on the floor. He doesn't have to do a darn thing positive and he's suddenly the most popular PM in history...or should I say 'the least unpopular'. Mr Howard, what are you doing for the next few years? Feel like a comeback?

whistlin' dixie, why would we want back the old disaster that caused the current disaster?

Abbott is the best available? OK Turnbull shot himself (and the party) in the foot with his antics... I remember something about a leader needing to ensure his followers are actually following. Hockey obviously wants someone else to do the hard yards so he can come in later as some type of saviour after the next election failure. Abbott - a return to the Howard era... will they try to fit the next election on more scaremonging. They don't control the navy and public service anymore - how are they going to manufacture more 'children overboard' and 'yellow peril' incidents?

I think he will do a great job. John Howard's biggest mistake was not giving Peter Costello a go. During PC's time he appeared to always be giggling in the background. It was only when John had gone that we saw his real potential. Workchoices was and is ok. There are too many useless people biding their time til retirement. They need to be out so that young ones can get into the workforce. We'll be years paying back the temporary PM's handout money. Tony is a good Christian man and will stand up for what he thinks.

The interesting thing to note is that there were 40 people in that room who were prepared to continue supporting a Liberal leader who had just spent three weeks campaigning for the Labor Party. And the clown still didn't shut up after the vote went down. The secret ballot, with 55 against the ETS and only 29 in favour highlights the true extent of Turnbull's abuse of executive authority, and his dishonesty, in claiming the vote was even. Add the 16 National MPs and the joint party vote was 71 against to 29 for. The party may well pull together from now on but the rest of us will not forget those who were prepared to aid and abet the disenfranchising of more than 2/3rds of the Coalition and all the folks who voted for them. They are not "fit and proper persons" to hold such a position.

For once (first time ever for me!) I have to agree with Bob Hawke, who when asked what sort of a leader Tony will make he simply said "temporary". Joe Hockey is the big winner out of this - his career will continue. So far in every interview I've seen Tony Abbott sounds like a babbling, incompetent apologist who is totally out of his depth. Wonder if the swinging voters in the city who decide who governs will go for his style.
