Earth Hour supporters left in the dark

25 Mar, 2010 04:01 AM
A THINK tank founded and chaired by the Liberal senator Cory Bernardi has launched a campaign to promote an anti-Earth Hour event - urging people to turn their lights on.

During Human Achievement Hour on Saturday, households will be asked to go about their daily business and turn on the lights for an hour to recognise ''the incredible accomplishments of the human race''.

It will be held at the same time as WWF's Earth Hour, for which people are urged to turn their lights off to promote efforts to mitigate global warming.

Human Achievement Hour was founded last year by the US free market think tank the Competitive Enterprise Institute as a reaction to Earth Hour.

In Australia the Conservative Leadership Foundation, founded and chaired by Senator Bernardi, is promoting the event on its website and on Facebook.

''While Earth Hour activists will be left in the dark, Human Achievement Hour participants will be going to the cinema, enjoying a hot meal, driving their car or watching television,'' the foundation's website states.

The foundation's campaign includes posters and brochures; one poster proclaims: ''Don't be stuck in the dark with the Communists. Turn your lights on!''

Senator Bernardi said yesterday the campaign was not his idea and is being run by university students who volunteer at his think tank.

His connection to the campaign is likely to embarrass key Liberals, including the shadow environment minister, Greg Hunt, who has pledged his support for Earth Hour.

Earth Hour is organised by the WWF and sponsored by Fairfax, the owner of the Herald.

This year's Earth Hour, and Human Achievement Hour, will be held on Saturday between 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

Cory Bernardi has forever been a brain dead poseur, and continues to prove it with this half-wit stunt. Is he trying to show Tony his right-wing intellectually moribund credentials? Suggesting this twit has the ability to chair a think tank is a contradiction in terms, and an insult to all think tanks. Cory Bernardi and think are two concepts that are mutually exclusive. And Cory, communists? Didn't we see them off years ago? Do try to keep up, Cory. Maybe you could try to move your thought boundaries into the 19th or perhaps early 20th centuries as a transitional experiment. Who knows, you may even get to understand a more modern philosophy of life, even if you do not like it.

Why would a blind man need the lights on?

It will be lights on as usual at my house. I refuse to have any part of the guilt-trip foisted on us every year by a bunch of out-of-work hippies in need of a bath.

Bushie Bill;Since there was no electricity in the 19th century. I would have thought your comment applies more to the WWF.

Live life! We have invented things to provide us with enjoyment to live! Why would I want to sit in the dark for an hour with all of what has been invented sitting idle. If WWF want to do that, good! Becasie that is what they do best - sit in the dark! Me? I dont have to support either promotion. I'll simply continue to enjoy life!

Go Cory. The last two years I've turned on every single light on in my house to demonstrate my views on earth hour. I also reduced my purchase of Fairfax newspapers.

This liberal senator should be ashamed of himself, and not hide behind the "uni students". I think Earth Hour is a great concept, if not for the global warming message, it makes for an interesting night, trying to entertain yourselves for an hour without power!! It's also great for the kids, some who think if the TV is off, the computer games are banned, and the computer is switched off, that their throats have been cut. Go Earth Hour!!

Sitting in the dark for an hour is the green movement's way of preparing the public for the pending brown-outs. And what a splendid metaphor for the green state of mind, "the intellectual lights are there but they refuse to use them." Let there be light, and there will be light.

As I understand it only lights need turning off for Earth Hour. Fridge can be on, Listen to Radio, Watch TV, chat about Earth Hour on Internet. Lights which are pollution for astronomers won't be on. A lot of the ligting doesn't need to be on, and no hardship turning them off. I'd say the bigger issue is the poorly designed offices which need lights on during the day. Reduce fuel wasted there have more fuel for future fun stuff. Resources are limited, so what would you rather use them for? The fun stuff or wasted on unnecassary stuff which isn't even fun. Save some money, switch off lights don't need. Its only one hour. But probably find can leave them off longer, and more often throughout the year. Putting lights on requires effort, an interruption to my reading, I read until I cannot see the page. Someone else usually puts the light on because they cannot see me. The need for lights is thus dependent on individual eyesight. Just turn off the lights not really needed. The idea is to discover what power consumption you don't really need, and you take for granted. You may find you can switch your lights on 1 hour later every day. Not just on the Earth Hour day.
