Labor's attacks highlight 'liability' label on Barnaby Joyce

Labor's attacks highlight 'liability' label on Barnaby Joyce

11 Feb, 2010 03:39 AM
TONY ABBOTT has declined to guarantee Barnaby Joyce will still be the opposition finance spokesman at the election as Liberal MPs began to express disquiet about the Nationals senator holding such a key portfolio.

Senator Joyce is being targeted remorselessly by the government because of his comments, which it deems irresponsible for the alternative finance minister.

On Tuesday, the government pressed Mr Abbott to sack Senator Joyce after he questioned Australia's capacity to repay its debt. Mr Abbott hit back yesterday, saying Labor attacked Senator Joyce at its peril: ''Every time the government makes nasty personal attacks on my colleague, they actually draw attention to the debt problem they've created''.

But there is growing unrest inside the Liberal camp about Senator Joyce's impact on the party's economic credentials.

Mr Abbott refused to guarantee Senator Joyce would be his spokesman by the time Kevin Rudd called the election. All he would say was that ''this is the team I will take to the election''.

One minister said the government would not back off from Senator Joyce, believing it had no option but to go after him, just as Labor went after Pauline Hanson.

If this made Senator Joyce more popular among his natural constituency, then so be it, the minister conceded.

Several Liberals said although Senator Joyce was good at raising issues, his tendency to make gaffes was proving a liability with the corporate sector and the Liberal heartland.

''No one thinks he's any good but there's no easy way to sack him now,'' said one MP. ''Tony is travelling well but there's a distraction every second day.''

These concerns were shared by Liberals who both liked and disliked Senator Joyce, the MP said.

When are we conservative rural people going to get a decent National Party politician? I never liked John Anderson - but at least he was intelligent. This Joyce is nearly as embarrassing as a certain Liberal Party Senator from Junee.

And Barnaby continues to play them like a fiddle (or should that be banjo). The left-wing intelligentsia, in both the media and the Labor Party are so infinitely confident in their superior intelligence to this man that they literally fall over themselves to do his bidding. “OH YOU FOOL” shouts the media from the rooftops “YOU CAN'T MENTION THE DEBT”. “SACK HIM” screams the government “MENTIONING THE DEBT IS IRRESPONSIBLE”. “Hang on”, say the voters “are you implying that our debt situation is so bad, that we can't even talk about it in case our creditors find out”. The debt is one of the government's weak spots. And both the media and the government are doing a sterling job helping Barnaby keep it in the headlines.

Barnaby Joyce has played a lot of football and he knows that while it’s the winger who sprints the last 30m down the sideline and dives over for a try, who gets the pictures in the paper the headlines and the glory, it is the forwards who grind the ball up the centre of the field taking combination tackle after combination tackle, placing the winger within striking distance and drawing in the defenders to create an overlap. They are the ones who really win the game. Of course in the egotistical and narcissistic world of Canberra, it is beyond anyone's comprehension that someone would willingly ‘take one’ for the team. They can understand Malcolm Turnbull's behaviour. But Barnaby's is beyond their comprehension. And to anyone who genuinely believes that our international creditors are incapable of googling 'total Australian debt', all I can say is, it must be lonely being the only intelligent person on the planet.

Barnaby Joyce is passionate about what he believes in & the people that he represents. He's not afraid to say what he thinks or whose toes he treads on. A far cry from some of the PC "yes" men that currently inhabit Canberra. There has been the odd pollie over the years noted for the same characteristics & grit that he displays. Hang in there Barnaby! Enjoyed your footie analogy Qlander, now that is something we can all understand!

At least Barnaby is telling the Australian people the truth ,,, something KRudd & Co would prefer them not to hear ... good on you Barnaby keep up the good work ...

Barnaby speaks the truth in plain language, something which honest working folk appreciate but which is alien and frightening to Kevin Rudd and his ministers.

There goes ex-farmer again, each of those he mentions are successful rural people, and I suspect there in lies his problem. Mr Coorey, well here he goes again, cant believe he is still banging this pot when Peter Garrett has been exposed as the most incompetent minister and has the tragic deaths of these four young men at his feet. Coorey you are as bad as the Prime Minister and as predictable and boring.

With a Degree in Commerce, majoring in Accounting, I think Barnaby is more than qualified to highlight the depth of our Debt and where the edge of tumbling into another Big, Black Hole of debt. Let the ALP Propaganda machine smear Barnaby on economics at their peril. Accounting is after all checking and balancing an economic program.

Ex Farmer. John Anderson was a lovely bloke. Barnaby Joyce is vastly more intelligent, and a much better and better informed politician.
