Lib vows river reform despite Nats

18 Jun, 2010 04:30 AM
A SOUTH AUSTRALIAN Liberal MP says his party is still committed to reform of the Murray-Darling Basin despite cracks appearing between the Liberal and National parties on a national takeover of the river system.

Jamie Briggs, whose federal electorate contains the threatened Lower Lakes, told Parliament y reform of the Murray-Darling is ''extremely important''.

''[It is] a reform that I will continue to fight on and I know my colleagues, particularly in South Australia, who see the worst of this, will continue to fight on,'' Mr Briggs said yesterday.

The Nationals are preparing to pass a motion at their national conference this weekend rejecting a proposal by the Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott, for a referendum to give the federal government control of the Murray-Darling Basin if the states do not hand over their power.
