 Nice breakfast but Fielding unmoved

Nice breakfast but Fielding unmoved

14 Jul, 2009 04:21 AM
THE persuasive power of Al Gore hasn't been enough to sway Family First Senator Steve Fielding, who says the climate guru did not answer a key question at his Melbourne breakfast yesterday.

At the end of the breakfast, attended by 1000 people, Senator Fielding spoke briefly with Mr Gore and said he would like a meeting.

The question bugging the senator, who holds a vital upper house vote, is why, if carbon dioxide is a major driver of climate change, atmospheric temperature has not been going up in the past 15 years as carbon dioxide has risen.

"We didn't get a chance to discuss that level of detail," Senator Fielding said.

Mr Gore had known who he was and said he had an important role, the senator said.

He told Mr Gore he would be happy to fly to Sydney for a meeting if a time could be found.

But last night he had not been able to make contact.

Senator Fielding has written to all senators urging them to take a close look at the science before voting on the emissions trading scheme next month.

He provides in the letter a chart making his point about rising carbon dioxide but steady atmospheric temperature.

Senator Fielding said in a statement it was incomprehensible that "we'll be voting for this scheme and going it alone before the rest of the world acts. Kevin Rudd and Penny Wong are hanging the Australian economy out to dry if the rest of the world doesn't follow suit."

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull is facing fresh problems on the climate issue, with Nationals senator Ron Boswell strongly opposing the Coalition supporting legislation for a 20 per cent renewable energy target by 2020.

Mr Turnbull wants the Liberals to try to own the issue of renewable energy.

But the leader of the Nationals in the Senate, Barnaby Joyce, said the Nationals had not yet reached a party position.

It was "hotly debated" within the Nationals, he said.

This bloke should stick to looking after families and not interfering with things he knows nothing about!

haha I think he might know quite a bit more about it than you tigerdicky. Time to take off your rose coloured glasses, AGW is a scam that will fleece us all. Climate change is natural and has nothing to do with co2. It just shows a gross ignorance of science to suggest it does. I see you have drunk the cool/aid. Gore is a very clever person also and I suggest you look at how much money he stands to make from this. It's hard to believe with acess to the internet today that anyone is dumb enough to believe in man made climate change. Looks like it's back to the dark ages.

A simple question. And because carbon induced climate change is an overwhelming scientific fact you would think there is a straight answer. And that Al Gore as a 'the' climate change warrior would be able to answer it in the blink of an eye.

Trouble is they won't answer simple questions. Make it sound complicated and throw a bit of science in and it must be right. There have been trials done that show CO2 levels affect plant growth and the amount of water needed to grow plants. The higher the CO2 level the more plant growth with less water requirement. We may find if they can and do reduce CO2 levels that it comes back to bite us when we all get hungry because plants won't grow as well any more.

Thank God for Senator Fielding. Going down the road of the Labor Govt will decimate the rural industry in Australia, decimate the export income to Australia from these industries and lead to food shortages in Australia. If there are shortages in Australia there will be no available food to import, so there will be food rationing. This is nothing but a political movement to take control and they do not have the true refereed science to back them up, so they resort to media sensationilism through press releases (that help sell papers) and the public believe whatever the media report. We are commonly called "climate sceptics", I have coined a name for these global warming believers - climate gullibilists.

It would appear that Senator Steve Fielding is able to think independently of the forces of those with a vested interest. I commend Steve's courageous stand on this issue. I understand Steve has considerable knowledge and understanding of this vexing issue. Yes pollution must be curbed, especially the wanton application of applying toxic chemicals in the production of food and fibre. This, along with synthetic fertilisers, is an irresponsible practice which destroys soil biology and organic matter, not to mention the health and environmental devastation. Time will demonstrate that this practice has more to do with climate change than the "experts" are willing to admit.

I believe the science behind climate change and I also believe that we should reduce our carbon emissions before it is too late. However I applaud Senator Fielding for doing exactly what an elected representative should do, that is doing his best to make the right decision for his constituents and our country. I hope the correct decision is ultimately made.

When the whole global warming debate was just gaining momentum more than ten years ago I heard a levelling comment made, which still rings true today - "If the pissant human race think they can have signbificant influence on the climate of this planet in such a short time (warming the planet as a result of emissions) it only serves to demonstrate the contrast between the size of their egos and their ability". Keep on challenging the loonies, Senator Fielding.

Love this one from QN 'Thank God for Senator Fielding'. There is a great hypocrisy here when talking about 'climate gullibilists'. Those who worship this 'imaginary god' are just as gullible, are they not? And if we all pray hard enough god will bring us rain and if it doesn't rain it is just payment for all our sins - what a load of ... Why is it so hard for some people to believe in credible science but happily give their life over to some imaginary higher omnipresent being?

When is it going to sink into The Nationals that there is a welded on Senate seat in every state for a confirmed climate sceptic. In fact there will be at least two in each state if Rudd calls a double dissolution. And most of that sceptic vote will be urban, on top of the existing regional vote for the Nats. Do the research fellas, and in urban areas not your own back yard. There is actually more confirmed sceptics out there than green voters. Carpe diem.
