Animal rights groups irate at ritual slaughter green light

10 Nov, 2009 03:55 AM
THE religious ritual slaughter of conscious animals will be allowed to continue at some Australian abattoirs, after a decision by federal and state agriculture ministers.

The move has angered animal welfare groups, which have waited two years for a review ordered by the previous federal government into the practice of ritually slaughtering animals by cutting their throats while they are still conscious for some halal and kosher exports to the Middle East.

RSPCA Australia said it was an "unconscionable decision" for a government that said it was committed to animal welfare. "No animal should have to feel the pain of having its throat cut while fully conscious - it is simply cruel and inhumane," said the RSPCA's scientific officer, Melina Tensen.

Four Victorian abattoirs have been allowed to kill animals without stunning for more than two years after being granted exemptions to the ritual slaughter standard requiring animals to be stunned unconscious.

Federal Agriculture Minister Tony Burke said they were the only four of Australia's 74 exporting abattoirs that had approval to kill without stunning and no new requests or approvals had been made since August 2007.

"The animal welfare community has put together a framework where management practices will be adopted that are compatible with the individual abattoir's operation that will reduce the potential impact to the animal," Mr Burke said.

He did not elaborate on what the practices were that would reduce the animals' suffering.

The Primary Industries Ministerial Council (state and federal agriculture ministers) said it would continue to consult with religious, industry and animal welfare groups.

But Animals Australia slammed the decision yesterday, saying that cutting the throats of conscious animals was barbaric and unacceptable to Australians. It said: "Any suggestion of further consultation on this issue is ludicrous - there has been 2½ years of consultation but the science and the sad truth does not change."

A spokeswoman for Victorian Agriculture Minister Joe Helper said he welcomed the outcome of the council's meeting in Perth on Friday. "The council agreed to publicly release the two scientific reports and engage in further consultation with all concerned parties - religious groups, meat processors and animal welfare organisations - with the aim of making any ritual slaughter practice as humane as possible."

The decision follows last week's plea from Princess Alia bint al-Hussein of Jordan to Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to stop the ritual slaughter without stunning as it undermined efforts to improve animal welfare in the Middle East.

Last year, Australia exported 1.5 million tonnes of red meat, of which 5316 tonnes came from animals killed without stunning.

These primitives should not be allowed to practice their barbaric ways in this country! It just shows you again how Labor supports these ethnic minority groups over the vast majority of Australians!

Absolutely tigerdicky. Just another example of Labor's capitulation to this sector. And with current immigration policies how long will they remain a minority group?

I agree that the practice shouldn't be allowed, but I gather the practice was also permitted under the Liberal/National government. As poor as allowing it to continue is, I doubt a Liberal government would have any more fortitude than Labor to make the right decision. Naturally, if it becomes a mainstream issue I'd fully expect the Liberals to hypocritically take the high ground.

A call to those judicial groups working on the legislating aspects of farming in Australia. Before you start having a go at the sheep farmers that mules to help protect the sheep from the agony of fly strike - have a go at these barbarians. It does form a part of all Muslim religion and is little more than a sectarian add on. Legislate it out of this country now and it's proponents should go with it.

This is appalling. Australia would sell its soul for a few shekels ($) and continue this horrific animal cruelty practice to appease Muslims. Since when did religion and cruelty over-ride humanity! Mr Burke doesn't even have the guts to state what the "management practices are that will be adopted that are compatible with the individual abattoir's operation that will reduce the potential impact to the animal." Probably because there aren't any practices that are going to be adopted, and everything will continue as it is.

The minister for agriculture must inform the concerned people of Australia what the alternative humane methods for killing the sheep are. Only then could further consultation be viable.

Now we have more "diversity" with regards to animal cruelty! How could a religion endorse animal suffering? How would any "god" be happy with an animal dying from slicing its throat while still conscious? It is all about profits, money, not about animal welfare. The industry just bends to the market. We allow factory farmed pigs, caged hens and now this atrocity! Australia is shamefully a land of animal abuse.

The irony here is that when this method of slaughter was first introduced centuries ago it was based on scientific principle and humanity towards slaughter of the animal. In the 13th century the most humane way to kill an animal would have been to completely slash it's throat in two moves. The fact that it also made sure the animal bled out completely, meant that the meat didn't spoil as quickly. For religious leaders to still be insisting on this method of slaughter shows that they are just religious 'lawyers'. Following the letter of the teaching rather than the spirit.

Ignorance at its best!

What would you expect from this Labor Government? No pity or compassion shown for these most gentle of animals slitting their throats whether it be pre-stunning or not pre-stunning is an act of atrocious cruelty. Killing sheep without prior stunning causes them to remain conscious for up to 20 seconds. Australia will now be seen as a most inhumane nation with a Government only paying lip-service to animal cruelty
