With the hot, dry conditions continuing to flush cattle from NSW and Queensland, a high Aussie dollar and low export demand, Meat and Livstock Australia says that export works may close early this year.
MLA is reporting that any widespread rains in Queensland and NSW could spark closures in early-to-mid December, as turnoff falls.
While rains are forecast for December, producers are likely to await their arrival before holding back stock, given the disappointing falls from recent promising northern weather systems.
With higher NSW supplies and lower processor and restocker interest, national indicator prices declined across all cattle categories this week.
This was led by falls in NSW and Queensland.
In contrast, follow-up rains in Victoria and SA saw a sharp recovery in prices in those states.
MLA says the late flush of new season lambs from western Victoria, and concerns over the deteriorating NSW season, has also pressured lamb prices downwards again this week.
This was led by the high-flying Merino lamb prices, which fell 14¢-34¢/kg (carcase weight) this week.
The heat has caused water and feed issues in NSW, forcing an early culling.
However, restockers are still active, with restocker prices holding at levels almost 30% higher than last year.
Mutton sheep prices rose this week on the back of further rains in Victoria and SA.
