Wine industry goes back to school

04 Oct, 2008 02:00 AM
Wine Australia have launched the Landmark Australia Tutorial, a five-day residential course for international opinion-formers on the evolution of Australia's fine wines.

The Landmark Australia Tutorial will take place during the first week of June 2009 and will comprise a series of master-classes and seminars that chart the development of Australia's fine wine credentials.

According to Wine Australia, it will be comprised of a unique course of text, narrative study and wine tasting, that is currently being devised under the direction of three principal tutors, Dr Tony Jordan, Michael Hill Smith and Andrew Caillard.

The tutors will be joined by Australian experts including James Halliday and Brian Croser who will add their own perspective to such themes as varietal benchmarking; winemaking philosophy and reviewing classic and rare expressions of Australia's regionally distinct and most expressive wines.

"The opportunity for us to engage the next generation of wine media, trade and commerce with an Australian fine wine story full of courage and ambition is very exciting," said the Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation, general manager of market development, Paul Henry.

"The belief in the existence of terroir, the notion of regionality, the benefits of blending etcetera are all vexed questions that we should now confidently address, staking a bold claim to be judged as a leading producer of wines of character, quality and interest."

Langton's fine wine director, Mr Caillard, said Landmark Australian wine there was a "narrative to be told about our great wines, our heritage and regional diversity".

"Australia has a long, proud history of winemaking, innovation and practice," he said.

"The stories of scientific breakthroughs, advances in winemaking philosophies and evolution of regional definition bring an inexhaustible freshness to the Australian fine wine experience.

"The Landmark Australia Tutorial creates a meaningful forum for international opinion leaders to discuss and debate the voice of our top Australian wines."
