AWI appoints McCullough acting CEO

09 Mar, 2010 12:23 PM
Australian Wool Innovation has appointed Stuart McCullough as its acting chief executive officer following last week's resignation by Brenda McGahan.

The appointment takes effect immediately, allowing Ms McGahan to leave the company next Wednesday, March 17.

She will assist in the transition arrangements in the interim.

According to AWI, Mr McCullough is well known to Australian woolgrowers, having been with AWI for nine years.

He has worked in a range of roles within the wool industry all his working life.

AWI chairman Wal Merriman said the board has begun an extensive recruitment process for suitable candidates for the permanent position of CEO.

This bloke must be a complete masochist but he has one thing going for him - he couldn't do any less than has been done in the last year and a half. As to a permanent CEO (an oxymoron at AWI!). Who in their right mind would take on this job? After the last CEO was abandoned by her Chairman? With a completely dysfunctional and meddling board? Anyone who wants this job is clearly unfit for the job and anyone who is fit for the job won't want it. I think Joseph Heller wrote a book about this...

What an excellent decision well done. Now Stuart and the board please get on with it and start to make things happen.

One can only hope that the AWI board truly get behind McCullough and offer him and the staff at AWI the support they deserve and need. As a former industry player, I can vouch for Stuart's clear, concise and articulated understanding of the wool game. Few of AWI's recent CEO's can claim to have come from the grass roots of the industry and worked in many facets of it. He's been around and know's what it takes to pull such a diverse industry together. Get stuck into it McCullough and for goodness sake 'wool industry' - get behind him !!

Sir George, you seem to be getting pretty close to the line with your opinion. I hope that you are aware the AWI is an Australian Public Company “Limited by Shares”. I hope that you are also aware that recently the legal fraternity caught up an anonymous defaming blogger, and that is they (the anonymous blogger) who were held to account for the objectionable published material and not the website owners. Legally the name Sir George, that you think you can hide behind, is about as good as hiding in a glass house. The tea lady is just biding her time as the next in line to be CEO. Don’t expect any improvement until the AWI chairman comprehends what the chairman's role is and some of his fellow board members understand even the basics of what being a board member in a public company entails. Shareholders have only themselves to blame as they voted to provide three more years of working capital and double the board member terms of incumbency for the egos and vested interests to fully express themselves. The Minister must be laughing his head off as his minders run to the Productivity Commission to belt all CRC’s because of the pathetic joke that AWI has become. A piece of free advice to Wally, put your AWI house in order before wasting time and levy payers money even considering a CEO replacement.

Ah Blowie, full of maggots as always. No amount of misdirection can hide the fact that your AWGA directors have made a complete hash of it at AWI and the whole place is in turmoil.

Stuart McCullough is a very good choice as acting CEO. He knows the business & will work for woolgrowers.

Sir Georgina, you might as well talk to your hand with that comment or, save it for your lawyer when the time comes.
