Sheep producers want to change

11 Nov, 2008 03:56 AM
About 85pc of sheep producers say they will change their farming practices as a result of attending workshops aimed at improving production, profitability and sustainability, according to Australian Wool Innovation.

The workshops are part of AWI's and Meat & Livestock Australia's Making More From Sheep program, based on a best management practice manual for sheep producers.

More than 2500 sheep producers have used the Making More From Sheep manual since it was launched last January.

"It is good to see so many sheep producers taking on one or two simple new practices to help them do what they do, even better," AWI project manager Mary Goodacre said.

"The adoption of best management practices will be a major feature of wool industry marketing into the future, where customers will demand evidence of high standards of animal welfare and land management. Making More From Sheep will help deliver this."

Elders and Landmark are industry partners in the program, while workshops are delivered by State Departments of Agriculture/Primary Industries, and Icon Agriculture in WA.

One hundred workshops have been held around Australia to support the program with more than 1500 sheep producers attending.

Of these, 98pc rated the workshop as useful or very useful, and 85pc reported they would change practices as a result of what they learned.

The Making More From Sheep manual is split into 11 modules covering business, personal and financial planning, pasture productivity, soil management, animal health, genetics, reproduction, natural resource management and marketing for wool, lamb and sheepmeat.

Australia's farmers have historically been the world leaders in adopting new and better production procedures. But new procedures require new investment, and it is awfully difficult to do this when politicians keep cutting off your money supply by forcing prices down.
