Tri-Solfen maker runs for AWI place

Tri-Solfen maker runs for AWI place

1/10/2008 12:59:00 PM
Sydney paediatrician, scientist and wool grower Meredith Sheil, the inventor of the Tri-Solfen mulesing anaesthetic, has thrown her hat into the ring for November's AWI board elections.

Dr Sheil has stepped into the fray amid high tensions through the AWI camp, with heated comment from board member Chick Ollson and Australian Wool Growers Association president Martin Oppenheimer and suggestions that AWI director Roger Fletcher may take over from chairman Brian van Rooyen.

She said she wanted to stand to bring AWI back to basics.

"I am basically running on a platform of basics," Dr Sheil said.

"I am a paediatrician, a scientist and a wool grower and I want AWI to conduct responsible scientific research.

"The focus should be back to the basics in the area and the focus should be on outcomes that keep farmers profitable.

"This should be combined with a focus on building demand for wool through well managed strategic promotion."

Dr Sheil said she was mainly concerned with health and welfare of sheep in the industry with a need to conduct further research.

"I think it is important that more research be carried out," she said.

Well I'll be, another so-called grower. Scientist with baggage, do we all have to use tri-solfen lambs for ear tagging, tail docking etc, as well as listen to more awga garbage or maybe we should just buy shares in Bayer and give up growing wool and move to Sydney?

Will Dr Sheil explain to woolgrowers her "well managed strategic promotion plan" and give us the low down on the outcomes she has in mind for growers to keep them profitable or does she just want us to buy tri-solfin?

This is so funny!!! Not one mention that her husband was on the AWGA executive. Just a suggestion to Dr Bayfield and other AWGA acolytes - try to get your story straight. One day it's marketing, marketing, marketing. Now it's research, research, research. Well what is it? Would it be their lack of international marketing experience that has made AWGA candidates change their message?

I am actually running because I believe that there is a need for: 1: An urgent change in stategic direction at AWI, particularly with regard to the issue of mulesing 2: Much better consultation with growers at grass roots level 3: A major improvement in research governance at AWI - to make sure science is conducted responsibly and to stop spin.

It is reassuring that someone with expertise outside sheep farming is entering the politics of farming. Sadly there is a chance that there will be resentment against Dr Sheil simply because she has been to university as so many around her will harbour an inferiority complex due to their not having a university education.

Well done Meredith ignore all the knockers who want to bring you down to their level of dirty politics. Your credentials are second to none and you are exactly the type of person we need on the board to ensure that our levy money is being spent on R&D that will give us a financial and productivity return on farm. As the inventor of trisolfen you should be proud and this only goes to strengthen your credentials not reduce them. well done and good luck.

Dr Meredith Sheil is standing as an independent candidate for the AWI Board & she has excellent international wool marketing skills. Remember it was Meredith who helped settle the Swedish wool trade debacle earlier this year. At IWTO in China she restored confidence for many of our international customers of Australian wool. She would be an asset on the Board of AWI, with a proven track record of commercial innovation & success.

Dear sir George, Your efforts to undermine and attack one of Australias leading researchers and scientist is typical of the people you represent. It is time for the boys club to be disbanded and allow for people with the right credentials like Dr Sheil to turn this wool industry around. Let's see if you can give credit where credit is due and make a statement for a change that is not politically motivated and acknowledges people like Dr Sheil for what they are, truely a great Australian who we should encourage to help the wool industry. You should not try to turn her into a political football. Go on, see if you can do it. But make sure you get permission first as you wouldn't want to upset that boys club of yours would you?

Martin, can you give us detail of Dr Sheil's international wool marketing expereince? we are all waiting to be dazzled by her CV. And what's this about her being independant? I've heard you and Chick have worn out a pair of moccasins running to her door urging her to stand for the AWI board.
