Abandoned camp fire triggers bush blaze

19 Mar, 2010 05:15 AM
Careless campers were responsible for a bushfire that threatened a South West property, the Department of Environment and Conservation said.

Three hectares of bush in the Bell forest, between Harvey-Quindanning and Matchbrook Roads, were burnt yesterday morning after an abandoned camp fire took hold of neighbouring scrub.

The blaze came close to destroying one property but firefighters managed to bring it under control.

Residents living 20km west of Quindanning were alerted to the fire at 10am. It was contained an hour and half later.

Fire crews from the department and Worsley Alumina, and local volunteer bushfire brigades are now mopping up.

No roads are closed but motorists are being asked to reduce speed and drive carefully due to smoke.
