WHILE much of the east has been drenched through February, western parts of the country have not seen a drop of rain all month.
Parts of Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia have seen over 400 per cent of their average monthly rainfall. Victoria has also seen its fair share with as much as 300pc of the monthly average.
It's a different story over Western Australia and the Northern Territory with many areas seeing less than 20pc of their average rainfall. This comes with the lack of a strong monsoonal trough and cyclones to deposit moisture into the north.
The trend has seen hot, dry easterlies pushing through the region with only weak changes to bring showers to the south coast.
The western coast of WA has been exceptionally dry. Perth has only seen 0.2 metres fall in the last three months. This extends right up the coast with many areas receiving less than 1mm for February so far.
In the north, the wet season is seeing a lull as the monsoonal trough remains absent. Darwin is only slowly gaining, with 120mm for the month, still 243mm below average.
The outlook does not look promising with the west expected to remain dry and only a slight increase in rain for the tropics.
