Immediate action needed on Carnarvon fires: PGA

24 Jan, 2012 11:00 AM
THE Pastoralists and Graziers Association (PGA) says it is calling on the State Government to immediately increase the number of fire fighting crews, equipment and appliances to combat the now out of control Carnarvon fires, including bringing in experienced fire fighting crews from other states.

“The Carnarvon fires have now reached the crisis point, with over 6000 square kilometres burnt so far,” PGA President Rob Gillam said.

“These fires have been raging since before Christmas and unless the State Government increases the number of fire crews and equipment, it will continue for many more weeks to come.

The fires are now threatening homes south of Carnarvon and Ella Valla, Edaggee, Yalbalgo and Marron stations have been advised to leave or get ready to defend their homes.”

“It is time for the State Government to take immediate action in controlling the Carnarvon fires and realise that we have a natural disaster taking place which, if left unattended, will see the entire Gascoyne burnt to a crisp.”
