Perth nears record 'dry' spell

25 Jan, 2010 12:35 PM
PERTH residents who got drenched on Saturday evening might be surprised, but the city is still on track to break its longest dry spell in 15 years.

No rain is forecast to fall by Thursday, and if that remains the case, there would have been no rain for 69 days, breaking the run in 1994-95.

But the record is more theoretical than actual, because many parts of the city got a short, sharp drenching on Saturday.

However, none fell in the Bureau of Meteorology's rain gauge at Mt Lawley, though Gosnells recorded 4mm, Bickley 1mm, Jandakot 0.2mm, Rottnest Island 1.6mm and Jarrahdale 1mm.

Bureau of Meteorology climate information officer John Relf said 0.2mm needed to fall before any rain was registered.

"Some places got a bit, but many others didn't," he said.

"I got a few big drops in my own rain gauge but they were not enough to tip it. The official line is the long dry spell continues."

Perth's longest dry spell is 83 days, in 1974-75, while the present big dry equals the fourth-longest, first set in 1887-88.

The city was on target to record its hottest summer, and second-hottest January on record, Mr Relf said.

The average maximum temperature this month is 33.5 degrees, 0.8 degrees below the 1974 record. The summer average is 32 degrees, 0.5 degrees higher than the previous best, set in 1977-78.

Other parts of the state got some "real" rain at the weekend though, with falls of up to 184.5mm being recorded at Kuri Bay, in the Kimberley as Cyclone Magda made its presence felt.

Other parts of the state's north also got a drenching, with Camballin (142mm), Curtin Aero (138mm), and Liveringa Station (109mm) also hitting centuries.
