Rain forces cyclist to abandon record attempt

02 Sep, 2010 08:47 AM
WAFARMERS communications manager Chris Marris has called off his attempt to break the world record for cycling from Perth to Sydney.

Ironically, as most WA farmers are desperate for rain, Chris’s ride was thwarted by wet weather.

Marris, 25, was almost halfway through the 4000 kilometre cycle between Perth and Sydney, which he hoped to complete in just over eight days, when the "heavy and unrelenting" rain forced the team to abandon the attempt yesterday for safety reasons.

Writing on his blog, Marris told supporters he was "gutted by the outcome", especially since he was on track to beat the record despite continued rain throughout the attempt.

He'd been plagued by rain since setting off at midnight on Saturday and forecasts show he would have had to ride through six days of it if he were to continue.

"The problem with the rain, which yesterday was heavy and unrelenting, comes from the side effects of poor visibility, particularly at night while on the road, and the associated wall of water that can almost knock you off your bike when a road train goes flying past," he said.

"The rain also led to increased chafing...With an inability to stay dry, despite multiple clothes changes, this was an issue that we would struggle to cope with."

He also experienced difficulties with his knee and at one point collapsed and hit his face on a scooter when it gave out on him.

"There is no question that I would like to make a second attempt at the record, but before any decision is made, I will need to speak with my soon-to-be wife, family and sponsors," he said.

"This attempt, including the associated fund-raising, has taken some 2000 hours of planning/training and a lot of money."

So far he has raised $14,000 for the Royal Flying Doctor Service through the ride.

"So for now, as we try to sort out our next step, I say sorry for not being able to break that record for you this time, and a sincere thank you to everyone, particularly my support crew, that gave me the chance to try," he said.
