Thumping heat returns to WA

16 Mar, 2009 09:02 AM
Perth and other parts of western WA have had their hottest March day in two years with temperatures soaring to the high 30s and low 40s.

Perth exceeded 38.5 degrees, and Swanbourne 39, nine and 10 above average respectively.

According to WeatherZone records, this is the hottest day in more than three weeks and hottest March day in two years.

Pearce, about 35km north of Perth, reached 40 degrees just after 3pm, 10 above average.

Parts of the Pilbara had their hottest day in more than a month, also due to dry, gusty easterly winds.

Port Hedland exceeded 42 degrees, Exmouth 41 and Roebourne and Mardie 40.

A cooler, more humid change will take effect in the southwest on Monday, but Perth is a chance to reach the mid 30s before the change.

Temperatures will be a little cooler than average for the rest of the week due to a lengthy spell of southerly winds.
