Tropical Cyclone Iggy heads towards WA

27 Jan, 2012 07:43 AM
TROPICAL Cyclone Iggy developed into a category 1 system early on Australia Day and is expected to intensify into a category 3 system early on Saturday as it slowly tracks towards the Pilbara coast.

At 2am WST Iggy was approximately 760km/h northwest of Exmouth over the Indian Ocean and moving south/southeast at 6km/h. Winds surrounding the centre have been gusting at 120km/h and are increasing.

The system is expected to continue to move southeast towards the Pilbara coast over the next 72 hours. A cyclone watch has been issued for coastal areas from Whim Creek to Coral Bay.

The effects of the cyclone have mainly been offshore, however there has been an indirect increase in rainfall over exposed parts of the WA Kimberley coast. Cygnet Bay has picked up another 162mm from 9am Thursday to 6am Friday, having picked up over 200mm in the previous 24 hours and its heaviest rain in 18 years. This heavy rain has been triggered by the monsoon trough, which is being fed large amounts of additional moisture by the developing cyclone.

Gale force winds may develop on the coast between Whim Creek and Coral Bay on Saturday afternoon or overnight into Sunday. Rain is expected to pick up on the Pilbara and Kimberley coasts from Friday. Cyclone Iggy and a strong monsoonal flow will also generate large waves and abnormally large swells in the region.
