WA's cane toad numbers set to explode

02 Dec, 2009 01:00 AM
They're here - but now their numbers are set to explode.

As the wet season approaches in WA's north, authorities fear the conditions will be ideal for the state's latest invasive pest, the cane toad.

It is the first wet season since the toads first crossed the Northern Territory border earlier this year, and provides perfect breeding conditions for female toads, who can lay up to 30,000 eggs during that time.

The toad frontline is about 30km east of Kununurra at present, with breeding populations established on the north-eastern shore of Lake Argyle.

Department of Environment and Conservation spokesman Corrin Everitt said this was expected to move significantly between now and April, when they were likely to reach Kununurra.

DEC would carry out an education campaign, as well as extensive mapping, while continuing research into controlling the toad.

“The DEC cane toad team will also be carrying out localised cane toad control in high priority areas, for example sites in Purnululu and Mirima national parks, as the need arises,” Ms Everitt said.

However, DEC has been embroiled in a dispute with volunteer groups also trying to stop the cane toad invasion.

Kimberley Toad Busters has received State Government money for its efforts, which it will spend on research to find a biological weapon.

But the group has also fallen foul of the DEC for killing toads with dettol and carbon dioxide, which the department does not consider humane.

Both Kimberley Toad Busters and another group, Stop the Toad, have received about $200,000 each in federal funding as well.
