The 23 kilometre section of fence near Hyden was erected by local landholders using materials provided by the Agriculture and Food Department.

"The attacks on sheep by wild dogs were having a significant impact on the livestock industry in this area," Mr Redman said.

"The work done to upgrade this section of the fence is a great example of the State Government working with the local community to address a very serious problem."

Agriculture and Food Department staff developed the innovative fence design, which provided dog-proofing at much less cost than more traditional approaches.

The Minister said a 200km section of the State Barrier Fence stretching from Narembeen to Ravensthorpe had been upgraded in the past year.

"Over the next five years, the rest of the fence will be extended and upgraded using $5.2 million in Royalties for Regions funding, in partnership with local communities," he said.

"That will mean the entire 1675km fence, stretching from north of Geraldton to east of Esperance, will be dog-proof standard.

"There is also $3.6 million in Royalties for Regions funding for strategic wild dog control."
