Country flavour to Barnett's new cabinet

18/09/2008 3:22:00 PM
Premier-elect Colin Barnett has unveiled his new cabinet which will have a country flavour.

The Nationals have three ministerial positions.

Nationals leader Brendon Grylls will be responsible for Regional Development, Lands and will assist Colin Barnett in his State Development portfolio.

Renowned country sportsman Terry "Tuck" Waldron will be responsible for Sport and Recreation, Racing and Gaming and Minister assisting on country health.

The third Nationals ministerial position was given to Terry Redman who will be the Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and minister assisting on country education.

Mr Grylls said the Nationals had signed an agreement that allowed the Nationals to maintain independence but he was not interested in disrupting parliament.

"We don't plan on being a wrecker, we don't plan on causing problems in parliament..." Mr Grylls said.

Independent Liz Constable becomes the new Education Minister and picks up the Tourism and Women's Interests while former Liberal education spokesman Peter Collier will manage Energy and Training.

Former Liberal leader Troy Buswell will be Treasurer and hold the super portfolio of Commerce which includes small business, trade, consumer protection and industrial relations, as well as the Housing and Works portfolio.

Mr Barnett said the new Department of Commerce would run along the lines of the US Department of Commerce.

The Planning and Infrastructure Ministry has been split up under the coalition government. John Day will be the new Minister for Planning while Simon O'Brien will take on the Transport portfolio.

Mr Barnett said there was confusion under Labor's Planning and Infrastructure set-up.

"Planning has got behind in this State," Mr Barnett said.

The Association of Mining and Exploration was quick to welcome the news Norman Moore had been appointed to the position of Minister for Mines and Petroleum.

AMEC chief executive Dr Justin Walawski said the appointment was good news and confirmed Mr Barnett's recognition of the importance of the resources sector to the State.

"Mr Moore is eminently qualified for the role and has a thorough understanding of the industry," Dr Walawski said.

"AMEC congratulates the new minister and is keen to work quickly with him to address the most pressing issues facing the resources sector including the restoration of WA's international mining reputation and the urgency to streamline the approvals process in WA."

Mr Barnett said he had spoken to Labor leader Eric Ripper and advised him Nationals member Grant Woodhams would be nominated as Speaker and if it worked out there would be support for a Labor nomination of a deputy Speaker.

The new cabinet will be sworn in next Tuesday and parliament would be likely to resume before the end of October when repealing Labor's brothel legislation, mandatory sentencing and truth-in-sentencing will be legislative priorities.
