NATIONALS leader Warren Truss has admitted it would not be practical for a Federal Government to fund a stand-alone Royalties for Regions program for Western Australia in the same way its State Government does.
Newly-elected Nationals MP for the WA seat of O'Connor, Tony Crook, is pushing for the new Government to match the $860 million State scheme to ensure greater funding for rural WA.
This is despite his proposal not being supported at the Nationals federal conference in Canberra in June for fears it would jeopardise regional funding commitments in other areas.
While he hasn't been lumped with the three prominent rural MPs considered pivotal to the formation of Government, WA National MP Tony Crook has made it clear he won't be sitting in the Coalition – just as a National MP – and his vote could not necessarily be counted on in helping the Coalition form minority government.
Mr Crook joined the Nationals in their party room meeting on Monday.
Leader Warren Truss acknowledged Mr Crook was elected with a commitment to try and deliver more back to the regions of Western Australia.
"He's indicated he wants to see progress in the implementation of his goals…and we share that wish to try and make sure that there is a blueprint for the future that involves regional Australia," Mr Truss said.
"We support a greater return to the regions of the wealth that's generated in the regions and we're talking to Mr Crook and others about how we can best achieve that objective."
While Mr Truss spoke of the success of the royalties for regions program in WA, he conceded the details of Mr Crook's proposal were not supported at the Nationals conference in June.
Mr Truss said the Federal Government does not collect much by way of royalties so "it wasn't practical to have a scheme identical to the one running in WA".
"We've got to look at alternative ways to deliver similar benefits to the people of WA and other States.
"We want to deliver as much as we can but we recognise our budget is in a difficult position.
"We remain committed to delivering to the regions – we want to deliver what we can as quick as we can and we want to deliver it in the best possible way."
