Grylls' secret meetings with billionaire Clive Palmer

10 Sep, 2010 03:48 AM
Nationals leader Brendon Grylls has refused to disclose details of six meetings he had with billionaire Clive Palmer around the time his mining application was environmentally assessed.

Regional development spokesman Mark McGowan has accused Mr Grylls of acting corruptly in the wake of a $45 million mining bond being lifted.

The bond formed part of the conditions for environmental approval over Mr Palmer's iron ore tenements in the state's north.

Mr McGowan obtained emails from Mr Palmer to Mr Grylls and the Environment Minister Donna Faragher, urging them to change the conditions and avoid the ordinary approvals processes for his $4 billion project.

The Queensland mining magnate is a prominent Nationals supporter, donating $100,000 to the party last year via a wine auction.

Mr Grylls submitted to the legislative assembly on questions on notice that he and key staff met Mr Palmer last year on February 3, April 3, May 29, August 11 and twice this year, on March 26 and May 12.

The EPA's final report was made to Ms Faragher in October 2009.

Mr McGowan said that despite attempts under the Freedom of Information Act to obtain all minutes of meetings and diary notes that took place at those six meetings, Mr Grylls has refused to release them.

"Mr Grylls had senior staff members, competent public servants, present at his meetings with Mr Palmer on every single occasion and he did not mention in my Freedom of Information Act request answer that there were minutes of those meetings and it is inconceivable that no notes were made of those meetings," Mr McGowan said.

"So Mr Grylls has now not complied with the Freedom of Information Act, he has not revealed the content of the meetings with Mr Palmer concerning Mr Palmer's environmental approval. I need to know and the public needs to know, what is Mr Grylls hiding?"

Mr Palmer today claimed Mr McGowan's questions over his lobbying and financial contributions were an attempt to stop people participating in the democratic process.

"The way I see it, Labor's spokesman on State Development is conspiring to stop people donating money to the Liberal Party," Mr Palmer said.

"I have been giving money to the Liberals and Nationals for more than 40 years, which is my democratic right.

"Mr McGowan wants to gag individuals because he can see first-hand what damage is being caused to the Labor Party nationally."

Mr Palmer said he was seeking a meeting with the WA Labor leader Eric Ripper to discuss the bond issue.

Mr McGowan yesterday announced he would forward all the information to the Corruption and Crime Commission for investigation, however he admitted today that he had yet to do so.

Mr Grylls has yet to comment on the matter.

It could be another example of being in bed with big business at the expense of who they should be representing, rural Australia.

If there was ever a reason to strip these vipers of their mining licences this is it!

I have been waiting patiently for a considered measured response from Motty Mouse, that great warrior for, and defender of the faith of, the Queensland Nationals, on this, but his calm and deeply objective response seems to have been lost in the ether. Repost, if you would, MM.
