Libs give farming senior cabinet role

20/08/2008 3:46:00 PM
A LIBERAL government would restore agriculture to a senior portfolio in cabinet.

Launching the party's agriculture policy on grower Barry Large's Miling property on Monday, state Liberal leader Colin Barnett said if elected he would make sure his door would always be open to the agriculture industry.

"The issues are many. The issues of the debate are about GM crops, about wheat marketing about water supply, salinity and it goes on and on," Mr Barnett said.

"Farmers may experience higher prices at the moment for some products but there has also been massive increases in fuel bills and massive increases in the cost of chemicals.

"There is also the debate about animal welfare and the very existence of live animal export of sheep and cattle, and it is an important industry for the WA farm sector and one which I support.

"It is fundamental to a large part of the WA farm sector, and indeed if you think of country towns, the animal business is labour intensive and they make their livings related to the live export industry.

"I know there are animal welfare issues but we will work very closely with farm industry and the RSPCA about animal welfare issues.

"We recognise it is one of the many issues and many challenges for farming in WA."

Work with RSPCA...guess they would do given the RSPCA in WA governing board are filled to the brim with farmers! Interesting that RSPCA WA are not the lead prosecuting agency in West Australia for farm issues!!

13/11/2008 | Cattle are getting a bad rap these days, so it's refreshing to see Britain's venerable National Trust getting into the business of "conservation cows".
