ETS delay will be of benefit to WA farmers

ETS delay will be of benefit to WA farmers

16 Oct, 2009 01:00 AM
The WA Liberal Party's motion to delay the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) negotiations until after the Copenhagen climate change talks proved to be a small victory for WA farmers last weekend.

While the motion, passed at the Liberal Party's annual state conference, was not specific to agriculture, its passing is good news for WA producers, according to Liberal Party rural policy committee chairman Brian Mayfield.

Mr Mayfield believes there is no need for Australia to endorse an ETS before Copenhagen.

"It would be ludicrous for Australia to be first," he said.

"We're only 1.4 per cent of the world's emissions; this amount is absolutely insignificant and if we move on an ETS before the rest of the world all it will do is just give some of us a feelgood sense and we have really achieved absolutely nothing on a global scale."

Although agriculture isn't being considered for introduction into the scheme until 2015, Mr Mayfield said there was no way producers could escape the costs of an ETS if it was introduced in 2010.

"Agriculture is going to be impacted irrespectively, with the cost flow-ons like fuel and transport, and that cost will be borne by many people in the industry," he said.

For the ETS to be passed by the Liberal party, Mr Mayfield said there are a few key points that need to be satisfied.

"There are three things that need to happen before we will endorse a trading scheme," he said.

"One was for the Labor party to accept our recommendations; two, that we do it based in part on what the rest of the world is doing; and three, that we are happy with the latest scientific research.

"If the rest of the world doesn't endorse an ETS and the latest scientific research is not conducive we should can the idea."
