A spate of farm injuries is expected over the next couple of months as growers move grain off farm and treat seed in preparation for planting.
However, the FarmSafe WA Alliance is pushing the line that "your crop is not worth dying for" as part of a new safety campaign.
The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has teamed up with the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) and other RDCs to produce several guides on farm safety.
FarmSafe WA Alliance executive officer Sheila Payne says January-February can be a dangerous time for growers.
“During busy periods, people are under intense pressure to meet deadlines, they get stressed and sleep deprivation becomes an issue,” Ms Payne said.
“If the fatigue is not managed properly we start to get near misses and accidents.
“In WA around this time the danger points include grain augers, belts and pulleys and people falling off silos and trucks.”
Australia wide, tractors and four-wheel drive motorbikes are a leading cause of deaths on farms, workshops are the greatest cause of injuries and unguarded grain augers are a significant cause of serious injury.
One of the guides developed by the joint venture of research and development corporations is OH&S Managing Grain Production Safely.
It contains very practical information collected from farmers on how to prevent injuries while preparing, moving and handling grain, during harvest, and while using silos and augers.
