Grain Growers not right choice for WA: PGA

Grain Growers not right choice for WA: PGA

08 Feb, 2012 02:00 AM
THE Pastoralists and Graziers’ Association (PGA) has questioned any benefits for West Australian grain growers under the recent arrangement between Eastern States based Grain Growers Ltd and the WA Farmers’ Federation.

“Our members fail to see how an organisation, which is nothing more than a remnant of NSW Government controlled grain handling, can provide any benefit to growers in WA,” PGA Western Graingrowers Chairman, John Snooke said.

“The eastern grain trade is domestic focused and Grain Growers Ltd has little to no experience in dealing with export issues.”

“In addition, Grain Growers’ largest and most influential membership comes from NSW Farmers Federation, whose Grains Committee still have a policy to return to the single desk.”

“For over 70years WA farmers were subjected to draconian regulations on how and to whom they could sell their grain in order to protect the interests of eastern states growers,” he said

“During the entire debate over the single desk, Grain Growers Ltd never once stood up to support the interests of the West Australian grain growers, so what makes them think they can do it now?”

“WA growers have seen tremendous benefits since wheat exports were deregulated in 2008 and the West Australian grains industry, like most of our other agricultural industries, continues to lead the rest of the nation and the world.”

“So why would we want to be represented by an eastern-centric organisation that has no idea about our industry or our state?” Mr Snooke said.

The P & G of wa are anti everything. they totally destroyed the AWB with there lobbying of gov, and now just look at the mess wa is in.

farmers in wa now tell me its a absolute nightmare selling grain.P G A theroy was more grain traders more money...its the exact oppisite,.. they ping one farmer off against another, grain trading has never been worse. it is a very small group, but they do huge damage to farmers.

More brainless comments yet again showing the very poor level of understanding within the pga! One day they might actually stop and think about what they are saying before putting it in print.

Who cares what Snookie says, PGA have as many members as I have chooks in the hen house after the fox got in. The reality is the vast majority of Australian growers want National representation and it looks like GGA is it and the GPA bum buddies like PGA, SAAFs perpetual grains committee and the VFF’s one and only grain member don’t like it

PGA would do themselves a service by visiting the Eastern States.

The statements that they have made reveal an alarming ignorance and show the organisation in a very poor light.

Jock Munro, You farmers on the east coast did not a lot to help iron out some of the AWB/SD inequitably marketing in the past which reveal an alarming ignorance and showed your organisation in a very poor light..

Graingrowers seem to be self serving, existing based on assets of the past. They have not covered their expenses with income, running considerable losses. Leadership requires vision and a plan to move forward in a viable way. Go for it PGA

Many Western Australian producers failed to undertsand that AWB Ltd managed a National Pool and all participents benefited equally.

Western Australia also had a very distinct advantage with their efficient supply chain.

Australian grain producers are collectively losing billions of dollars, as we have been forced to compete against each other, to become suppliers of cheap grain to global end users.

Well Ken and Jock clearly you again want to drag the industry backwards and again you cannot see for your own bigoted dilusion. If there was any evidence that your way was the right way then how is it under a single desk I never received more than $230 for my wheat and since deregulation barring this year it has never been under this price yet now I have the choice not to sell into a down market which even AWB wouldn't have traded in so where the difference, All we did was support the domestic basis in the East. GGL and NSW Farmers and Now WAFF do not represent me and my choice never will.

Regie,

You have to understand that people like Jock are unwilling to take the time out to research prices and would prefer to be absolved of all responsibility.

i.e. if they have no choice they cant make the wrong choice.

Jock - the single desk is over
