Redman to attend crisis meeting

11 Mar, 2010 01:00 AM
Agriculture and Food Minister Terry Redman has spoken to Premier Colin Barnett and will investigate the issues and challenges facing farmers for the approaching season.

"The inability to get finance and the prospect of a tough season for farmers has come up quite a lot in my recent conversations with growers and others from the agribusiness sectors," he said.

"This is something the Premier and I have spoken about and he is aware of the looming challenges in the Wheatbelt.

"Clearly there are some issues that are having an impact on cashflow such as unsold grain from last harvest and low grain prices.

"I am keen to get a clear picture of challenges facing the agriculture sector for 2010 and am seeking advice from farmers, consultants, the banks and the Agriculture and Food Department."

Just as I thought, the pollies would blame everything bar the real problem. When are we going to hear about the only way to make agriculture viable again, and that’s to bring their costs in line with their income, their world market income.

Don't worry Dunart. Redman has been called to explain why he shouldn't be sacked. He would be in any other organisation! Introducing GM when most farmers don't want it and 85% of the people don't want it either. Where do you find these clowns? If you are having a crisis the last person you would ask for advice would be a polly. First they will establish a committee to decide whether there is a crisis. A sub-committee will then be formed to decide what to do about the crisis. Naturally another committee will investigate the funding of any decision made by the solutions provided by the investigation. An appeal will be made to the Federal Government, which is noted for their speedy responses to crises, and will in due course appoint a minister to investigate this request from WA. As you will realise this all takes time so don't expect too much. After all it is now some time since this process began and the appropriate minister is on holiday however be asured that action will taken if not in the immediate future then certanly before the crisis has completely disappeared. Meantime, we have dispatched several water tankers to the Margaret River wineries, but not for selfish motives we assure you!

Let the market be the market is the kindest thing. Everyone lives or dies by the decisions made. Everyone makes mistakes ie storing grain we should have sold months ago. Buying inputs today when we should have brought them 2 months ago. What do we expect governments to do? Why should we as farmers expect special treatment? Is that fair? There will be fewer farmers but there will still be farmers. No-one forces us to be farmers that is our choice. Work hard and do your best and be satisfied you have given it ya best shot. Less whinging and more work helps.

If we had spent as much time chasing profitability as we have chasing productivity it would be a different story. In the last fifty years our wheat production has doubled and the price of wheat has more than halved. Then go to the RBA site and have a look at the rural debt and see if you can work out for yourself what has happened. Graingrowers are subsidising themselves with borrowed money. Money that always, always, has to be re-paid.
