SEEDING has kicked off in WA for the 2009 season with canola going into moisture-filled paddocks on the south coast.
What is believed to be the first seed injection for the year took place on grain grower Dennis Joyce's Munglingup property, situated about 170km west of Esperance.
Dennis runs the property with his two sons, Trystan and Ryan and contract farm manager and agronomist David Large.
The two boys manage the farm's day to day operations with Mr Large, while Mr Joyce, an accountant by trade, keeps his eye on bigger picture management issues.
Recent industry speculation had suggested Mr Joyce was planning to plant a 100,000 hectare crop this year.
That would have made it the biggest crop on record for WA, rivalling the efforts of Merredin grain grower John Nicoletti in 2008.
However, the record was set straight when Trystan confirmed that the Joyce family's seeding program for the season, would be a lot smaller than the magical 100,000ha, but still huge, at 40,000ha.
"Our crop this year is 100,000 acres, so it's not quite as big as reported, but it is still going to take some work," he said.
The Joyce family runs their farming operation across several locations.
The main locations are at Varley, Lake King and Newdegate.
They also have properties at Munglinup, Jerdacuttup and North Karlgarin.
Trystan said the family land was a mixture of owned and leased properties, with the majority owned.
They planted a 22,000ha crop last season, and increased this year's program by almost double after purchasing more land during the year.
