IT took only one entry from long time Farm Weekly subscribers Don and Barbara Bell to win this year's Farm Weekly-WA Angus breeders heifer competition.
The Bells, who farm on Albany Highway frontage at Redmond, were over the moon about the win when told on Tuesday after the competition draw.
"We can't believe it, I am speechless," Mr Bell said.
"My wife put the entry in and I really hadn't thought much about it."
The 10 "classic Angus beauties", which will be selected from the entire 2009 heifer calf drop from Murray and Lynne Chapman's Yarrumup Angus stud, Coolup, will join the Bells' herd of 340 mostly Angus-Friesian breeders which they run on their 440ha property.
The Bells have been at Redmond for 19 years after moving across from the Yallingup Siding area, where their neighbour was WA Angus Society president Lindsay Wolrige, who drew the winning entry from the thousands of entries received.
It is not the first Farm Weekly competition the Bells, who have been subscribing to Farm Weekly for over 40 years, have entered.
"My wife enters the occasional competition in the paper, but we never thought we would win one," Mr Bell said.
And when it comes to Angus cattle Mr Bell can't speak highly enough about them.
"They are good finishers and tend to finish a lot earlier in tough seasons compared to other breeds," Mr Bell said.
"They also put down more fat cover which the buyers are looking for a bit more of these days.
"There is also a wide range of quality bulls to choose from in WA which is good as well."
Entries for the competition, which is now in its third year, continue to grow and again entry numbers exceeded expectations.
Farm Weekly publisher Trevor Emery said the first competition was drawn in 2008 and in 2009 entries doubled and this year they again increased by 30 per cent.
