Can WA's beef industry work together?

11 Dec, 2009 01:00 AM
CAN the WA beef industry put it's differences aside to work together for the greater good?

WAFarmers is urging beef industry representatives to do just that - stop all the carry on and have a round table discussion to push the industry forward, as suggested by the beef stocktake report.

However in the same breath, its president Mike Norton hit out out at comments made by Pastoralists and Graziers Association (PGA) president Rob Gillam regarding the stocktake report, in last week's Farm Weekly.

Mr Norton said he had received many phone calls from irate beef producers who were perplexed with Mr Gillam's and the PGA's attitude.

"We all start scrapping over the stocktake report when we need to be working together," Mr Norton said.

"I think sitting down in a round table discussion, as recommended in the stocktake report, would be more constructive than Rob's comments.

"To have an effective round table, you need to have an open mind."

One of the recommendations of the beef stocktake report was that the Minister for Agriculture and Food Terry Redman convene a WA beef producers round table.

According to the report, the round table would provide a forum for bottom up ideas and priorities that will enhance the future development of the beef industry in WA.

It suggested that the round table have an independent chair and nominate four representatives to join the WA Beef Industry Investment Council - the formation of which was another recommendation in the report.

On the proposal of getting together for the industry's sake, Mr Gillam said what the PGA had suggested was, in actual fact, for the greater good of the industry.

"Everyone is looking for sustainability in the industry and there are things in that report that are not conducive to a sustainable industry," Mr Gillam said.

"We are very much against government assistance in the beef industry."

Red Meat Action Group (RMAG) chair Gary Buller said as nice as it would be for the industry to unite, it wasn't going to be that simple.
