THE WA Lot Feeders' Association will take its biannual Better Beef show to the WA College of Agriculture, Cunderdin, next month, with the two day event exploring optimal pathways to market for the grainfed carcase.
Better Beef will run on April 8 and 9, with day one speakers including former Australian Meat Holdings chief Ross Keane, MLA's Samantha Jamieson, Wellard managing director Steve Meerwald, Australian Lot Feeders' Association executive director Dougal Gordon and WA Rural Woman of the Year Sue Middleton.
Day two of the program has a strong focus on understanding carcase quality and relationships, led by Borrello Beef's Ned Borrello and MSA's Jason Satherley, Dave Pethick and Peter McGilchrist from Murdoch.
WALFA vice chair and Hyden lot feeder Trevor Hinck has been the driver behind the program which he said was aimed at achieving optimal understanding of the power of a consistent quality carcase.
"We want WA consumers eating WA beef and WALFA is doing everything possible to look at the factors that will influence processors, retailers and restaurant owners to remain 100 per cent faithful to the WA grainfed product," Mr Hinck said.
"We've asked Ned Borrello to take us through a good and a bad carcase in terms of the ones that make money for him, and those that don't.
"We need to better understand this and work together in delivering best possible consistency of product.
"We've also asked Matilda Bay owner Warwick Lavis - who has only recently returned to purchasing a WA grainfed product - to comment on why he was forced to go east to procure product."
Mr Hinck said that if the lot feeder could work with the breeder to produce a carcase that was consistent in the way it performed for the processor, then a much better relationship between these two sections of the supply chain could be developed.
"We'll be having some very honest and open discussions at Cunderdin during Better Beef ? it will be an excellent way to gain an insight into this sector."
