Soft cattle number one for Woolies

24 Oct, 2009 01:00 AM
WOOLWORTHS cattle buyer Peter Stacey gave producers an idea of what type of cattle the retailer is looking for during the Albany Agricultural Society Beef Female Competition last week when he attended day two of the tour in the Denmark region.

Mr Stacey said that given the lateness of the season this year that Woolworths would be looking at dropping back around 10kg on their carcase specifications with the aim of maintaining a 190kg-270kg carcase weight range.

"We are not particularly into the leaner type of cattle," he said.

"We feel that producers need to prioritise keeping softness in their cattle and to plan for their particular market aims."

Mr Stacey said that given WA's main outlet was the domestic market, the smaller carcase-type cattle with moderate frames were more ideal.

"Producers need to have a clear idea of what market their cattle are best suited to," he said.

"It has been interesting to see on this tour the different areas specialising in the various markets.

"The producers in the Denmark area are turning off a large proportion of the grassfed vealer cattle due to the highly productive, high rainfall country they are situated in. This area is able to support the more high maintenance, but lucrative, Friesian-Angus cross females.

"Further east however where the rainfall is less reliable, the cattle are best suited to produce store feeder calves destined for the fattening/feedlot market."

Mr Stacey said for Woolworths, eating quality was the number one priority.

"There is no point in going into hard, highly muscled cattle," he said.
