FIVE breeds, 54 bulls, one Knutsford selling complex and 38 keen bidders all came together at the Kojonup Invitation Bull sale last Wednesday, resulting in a very respectable gross of $113,250.
The sale cleared 35 bulls at an average price of $3236, with an exceptional Terraneil Poll Hereford sire posting the top price of $5750.
Some breeds sold better than others with the standout being the Murray Grey offering, which was definitely not under a grey cloud as the entire section of the catalogue achieved a 100 per cent clearance.
The top price honour went to Terry and Sandy Woods who presented Terraneil Dare Devil D75 after a wait of 33 other bulls, and it was Ted and Bev Hill, West River, Ravensthorpe, who recognised Dare Devil's potential and fought hard to secure him for $5750.
After the hammer went down, Ted said the primary trait they were looking for was temperament.
"His temperament is unbelievable, Poll Herefords can adapt to any environment and they don't break down," he said.
"They are tough cattle for tough country."
Flaunting his figures of +24, +41, +48 for 200, 400 and 600-day weights, an EMA of +1.1, carcase weight of +28 and RBY +1.1, Dare Devil showed he was worth every dollar.
He was sired by Kimbowmoss Fell 8 and was out of the homebred Terraneil Annette B33.
The Hills said they were first attracted to the Poll Hereford breed because they were a pretty type of cattle and bought their first cow with a calf at foot in 1964.
They took it to a couple of shows and won a handful of awards, so Ted said they decided to keep breeding them.
Currently residing at the Hill's property are 40 purebred Poll Hereford heifers and they purchased Dare Devil to take up the position of the only bull in residence.
"When I see something I like, I just buy it," Ted said.
"He had everything I was looking for, temperament, good soft skin, beef on the back end and well covered ribs; a good all round bull.
"The Woods family should be very proud of him."
