THE record price for sheep sold in WA was smashed at yesterday’s Katanning June Special sheep sale when two lines of wethers sold for $156.
The previous record of $108 had stood for 20 years, but that mark was eclipsed several times at yesterday’s sale.
The sale result was a testament to just how low sheep numbers are in WA, but still exceeded price expectations leading into the sale.
All up 27,347 ewes and wethers were yarded for the sale, which was conducted by Landmark and Elders.
Landmark’s offering of 16, 614 ewes and wethers averaged $112 per head, while Elders averaged $85 per head for its 10,733 sheep.
The first top price line consisted of 1430 two-year-old wethers, August-shorn, Pallinup and East Strathglen blood and was offered by KR & DH O’Keeffe, Gnowangerup. The line was bought by Wellard Rural Exports.
The second line consisted of 350 2yo, October-shorn, Golden Hill blood wethers offered by Castlak Farm. These were bought by International Rural Exports for the Saudi market.
Live exporters were most prominent at the sale taking home all but 10 of the lines on offer.
