THE group responsible for reviewing and making recommendations about the direction of WA's beef industry held its first meeting this week.
The Western Australian Beef Industry Stocktake Management Committee is now up and running following the recent confirmation of Commonwealth Government funds through Meat and Livestock Australia's Donor Company Program and from the Western Australian Cattle Industry Compensation Fund.
This funding was achieved as a result of the efforts of the Western Australian Farmers Federation, the Pastoralists and Graziers Association, the Red Meat Action Group and the Western Australian Meat Industry Authority.
The Management Committee is made up of: Mike Norton (WA Farmers), Tim Darcy (Pastoralist and Graziers Association), Peter Trefort (Meat and Livestock Australia), Michael Rappatoni, Mark Panizza and Mike Thomas (Australian Meat Industry Council), Janet Thompson (Western Australian Lot Feeders Association), Dr Mark Dolling (Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia), Barbara Dunnet (Red Meat Action Group and local government) and Renata Paliskis-Bessell (Western Australian Meat Industry Authority and Project Manager). Executive Support will be provided by Kevin Chennell from DAFWA.
Importantly, to ensure that the Management Committee can concentrate on the job at hand, all members have signed a Confidentiality Agreement which limits them from talking about the project outside of meetings.
The Committee will send out (at least monthly) media releases to keep beef industry stakeholders updated on the progress of the study.
In addition, the consultant (appointed by the Committee) will actively consult with stakeholders and an industry forum will be arranged towards the end of the project.
