Pig out at Medina

24 Mar, 2009 01:45 PM
Pig producers will be able to ‘pig out’ at the industry’s open day at the Department of Agriculture and Food’s Medina Research Station on Friday 27 March.

The Medina Pig Day Out will feature a ‘butcher’s special lunch’, while showcasing research by the department, the Pork Co-operative Research Centre and Australian Pork Limited (APL).

Department senior technical officer Hugh Payne said producers would get a rare opportunity to have a tour of the Medina facility and hear about the latest innovations to make businesses more profitable.

“There has been some interesting work on enhancing the performance of pigs immediately after weaning, as well as strategies to improve the performance of female progeny,” Mr Payne said.

“Visitors will also get to see the Feedlogic system ‘Boris’ in action and hear about the Feedlogic nutrition program.”

Dr Darryl D’Souza from APL will tell participants about research on how pork from pigs fed selenium may help reduce colon cancer in humans.

Other APL representatives will provide an update on the research body’s strategic planning process and its national research, development and extension strategy, and training requirements to comply with the new model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Pigs.

A range of environmental issues affecting the industry are also included in the program.

* Participants must register as soon as possible to attend the open day by contacting Karen Moore on phone 9368 3636, fax 9474 1295 or email karen.moore@agric.wa.gov.au
