Woolworths backs Aussie pork labelling

08 Dec, 2008 05:45 PM
Woolworths will add the "Australian Grown" logo to all fresh pork packaged for sale on supermarket shelves.

This logo will start to appear in stores from tomorrow, and follows a similar endorsement of the Australian pork industry by Coles last week.

According to Australian Pork Ltd, the distinctive label will help Australian consumers to identify and choose Australian Pork.

APL says the words "Australian Pork" will also appear on the product bar code label on all fresh pork products.

APL chief executive officer Andrew Spencer said this was definitely a step in the right direction, especially when APL's consumer research has shown the uncertainty and confusion around the identification and labelling of pork and pork products.

Mr Spencer said Woolworths had been a solid supporter of Australian pork farmers through the trying times of the last two years, often paying above market price to ensure they secured top quality product.

"Most importantly consumers will benefit from the reassurance on the label that what they are buying is guaranteed Australian grown pork," Mr Spencer said.

"This is something our farmers have been longing to achieve as it can now clearly differentiate Australian pork."

Mr Spencer said the impact of record high grain prices, fuelled by drought, coupled with the deluge of highly subsidised imported pork entering the market has made it the toughest times in living memory for our pork farmers.

For those producers left in the industry, he said this "Australian pork" labelling opportunity will enable Australian farmers to connect directly with consumers and allow consumers to make a clear retail decision to support Australian grown.

It would be nice to see supermarkets also differentiate between intensively farmed pork and free-range, thereby allowing consumers to make informed choices. But they don't understand - and don't want to understand - the cruelty inherent in intensive pig farming, do they?
