THE Kaula Dale information field day at Kojonup was a great success last week, with a team of speakers from the Agriculture and Food Department (DAFWA) advising producers on how to get the most out of their flock's genetics.
About 30 producers from Kojonup and surrounding areas attended the day, which was followed by a site visit to Tim and Steph Stevenson's farm to view the excellent genetics Kaula Dale has on offer.
The amount of questions producers asked of the DAFWA staff was testament to the interesting topics they presented on.
The first speaker to kick off proceedings was DAFWA Katanning senior geneticist Johan Greef, who spoke about the importance of EBVs when selecting rams and improving flock genetics.
Dr Greef also spoke about the significance of joining times, and what factors contribute to good carcase qualities in young lambs.
He explained the impact environment, or phenotype, had on flock genetics.
"The feed, management, paddock size, age of the dam, the day when the animal was born and the birth month of the animal can all make a big difference as to what you see in your lambs," he said.
Day of birth was used as an example of the environment's potential impact on genetics.
"For every day an animal is born later in the season, it has a negative effect on fleece weight, fibre diameter and bodyweight," Dr Greef said.
"Depending on the season, if it's a hard year the effect will be bigger.
"Everything adds up."
