NLIS - what sheep and goat owners need to know

7/10/2008 2:43:00 PM
The Department of Agriculture and Food has released a DVD and booklet outlining the responsibilities of sheep and goat owners using the National Livestock Identification System.

Titled Sheep and Goats: What You Need to Know, the package explains how NLIS works, brand registration, marking, vaccination, transport, feed and water requirements, animal welfare, controlling pests and diseases and where owners can access more information and advice.

The department's brands registrar Farran Dixon said the DVD provided a step-by-step view of all facets of sheep and goat ownership which would be valuable for both small landholders and experienced commercial farmers.

"With more than 50,000 small landholdings in Western Australia, many people who own only a few sheep or goats may not understand all of their legal responsibilities as livestock producers, and particularly the rules relating to identifying stock," he said.

"However, the DVD and booklet will also be useful for commercial farmers who may not be aware of every aspect of how the NLIS works."

Filmed in the Avon Valley with the participation of a number of local people, the DVD and booklet include a comprehensive glossary and a useful contacts page.

* Copies of the DVD and booklet are available from Department of Agriculture and Food offices or by emailing snorton@agric.wa.gov.au

Great, but wouldn't it be great if you could produce a cattle NLIS DVD as well?
