Despite numbers lifting 30 per cent at saleyards this week to be 6pc higher than this time last year, lamb prices are at record levels for January, according to Meat and Livestock Australia.
MLA reports that the Eastern Trade Lamb Indicator hit 501¢/kg (carcase weight) this week, 24pc higher than the previous January record in 2004.
All national lamb categories were well up on last year – by between 22pc (heavy lambs) and 34pc (restocker).
Lamb demand remains intense from processors, live exporters, feeders and restockers, driven by strong local and overseas interest.
Similarly, mutton sheep prices hit a record of 326¢/kg this week, driven by strong Middle East sheepmeat and live sheep demand, restocker demand and a 20pc year-on-year fall in yardings.
