AMID the heat and the flies, Elders auctioneer Wayne Manoni, displayed a fine mix of tenacity and humour to achieve a $50,000 top price at last week's Merredin clearing sale, on behalf of EJ and SS Welsh.
The winning bid was placed on the second last machine offered, a John Deere 8760 4WD tractor.
While bids were a bit slow in coming, buyers came in late just before the fall of the hammer, although a few of the larger items failed to make the vendor's reserve.
Another John Deere, a 4840 Power Shift with 24.5 x 32 duals, also attracted keen bidding before being knocked down for $12,250, while an elderly Inter 1486 was bought for $3500.
Another blast from my past was an International 554 FEL which sold for $4000, a bit more than its new price all those years ago.
Fans of Volvo trucks would have enjoyed the day. A N12 tandem axle prime mover sold for $15,000 while a tandem drive N1023 with a longer wheelbase, could only attract a bid of $5000, which the vendor deemed inadequate.
Three older trucks were offered with an unlicensed Ford D1210 tipper making $3000, an unlicensed J5 Bedford with Honda pump and two water tanks totalling 7000L selling for $1700 and a licensed Dodge 575 with rebuilt engine making $1100.
A 1974 Land Cruiser ute with 1000L fuel tank and 12V pump made $1250.
A 28T Jetstream round field bin sold for $3100, an 18T Lees field bin made $350, an Inland Sales seed cleaner fetched $2100, while a 16.6m (35ft) Cole auger with hydraulic lift and drive sold for $2300.
Two Jetstream five-in-one bins with Hobbs Hoists were offered, with the younger model making $1000 while the other went for $800.
Two 24 disc Chamberlain ploughs were offered, both in good order and both with good discs, one having a (easily removeable) dual hitch fitted, with both selling for $900 each.
A 13.5m (44ft) Flexi Coil bar with knife points and press wheels was passed after a top bid of $23,000, while the two Shearer air tanks were offered, the one with a hydramotor drive made $900, while the PTO model fetched $500.
